December 28, 1949 - The Daily Pattern

I've seen this pattern several times before, it's very pretty and I attempted to make something close to it for the fair two years ago.
Have I ever mentioned before quite how much I love embroidery.  It personalizes anything that you want to just your own specifications.  I love flowers too and with my new style there are going to be plenty of flowers.  I think that I might make a jacket or two with these flowers embroidered on them.

December 27, 1949 - Merry Christmas to All!

Oh what a holiday season it has been.  A lot of cooking and shopping and best of all spending time with my dear husband and our little furry boy.  I worked quite a bit but I am now off until the new year.  My vacation is going much faster than I would like for it too I might add.
As for my presents, my husband was of course wonderful as always, getting me one of the things that I wanted most of all.  He bought me the Grace Radio Victoria.
It is modeled after an old radio and of course the best part is that it connects to an MP3 player in the back and I can listen to all of my old radio shows and music while having the graceful look of an old radio.  Now if I can only talk him into an old tv we'd be good to go.
To mention all of the other things I received would be far too time consuming.  However, next year we have already discussed it and we are going to scale back gifts quite a ways.  We simply have nowhere to put anything anymore so we are instead going to buy four or five nicer presents for one another and go do something fun together instead.
I might even try hand making some of the gifts next year.  I know that it is not the norm but I think that it would be a cute way to show him how much I love him that I spent so much time and effot on him to make him something wonderful.
Another decision that was made this year was that from now on the Christmas Eve gift giving tradition is going to be changed a little for next year.  We are going to start giving Christmas pajamas to one another on Christmas Eve so that we are festive.  I know that there are other families that do this and I just think it is adorable.
Recently I have bought up a whole bunch of new patterns that would be ok for a retro look including some new retro patterns from Butterick.  I am going to take a new stab at the whole new wardrobe thing, this time I am however going to tackle my biggest obstacle and that is my husband.  He hates all retro clothing, he thinks that it makes women look amish and that is why I am going to use new patterns mixed with retro details so that we are both happy.  What is a true fifties marriage without the husband being happy.  Besides he is the one that has to look at me all day and if he isn't happy with what he sees I am not doing something right as a wife.
Today we are going to be going out shopping for new shoes for the both of us and a few groceries but nothing major, we have tons of leftovers to get through.  Tonights dinner will probably be just that, leftovers.

November 10, 1949: The Daily Pattern

Loving this dress.  The neckline is a little close but I love the check and black cording.  Such a nice dress.
I have to admit that I am not completely in love with this.  It looks like a whole lot of work for something that is going to be in a constant state of needing to be washed.

November 7, 1949 - Sewing Day

In preparation of the official turnover into 1950 I have been thinking, of course, a lot about wardrobe, or should I say my lack there of so today is going to be spent sewing.  I know that right off the bat I am going to make two new skirts.  One of them will be of a material that I bought last year and it is a lovely leaf pattern.  Something I got from joann fabric when it was on sale last december or so.  I also just mail ordered 4 new skirt fabrics that are warmer for the winter weather.  Now I don't know if snuggle flannel is very authentic but in these Pennsylvania winters it will keep me from having to wear pants which is much more non-authentic.

Here are the ones that I ordered today.  The first three are the snuggle flannel and the fourth is just a plain cotton that I got specifically for thanksgiving day.

Now I absolutely love the Thanksgiving one because even though it is new, it has a wonderfully vintage feeling, you could just see someone from the fifties wearing a skirt or an apron made out of this beauty.  I think that I am more excited by that one than any of them.
Well it's nearly 8:00 and I have to start getting my housework done for the day.  Off I go to the kitchen yonder.

November 5, 1949 - The Daily Pattern

I love this dress, I think that it was a beautiful dress, can you imagine this dress made in a maroon velveteen with gold or brass buttons or even navy with pearl buttons.  somewhat simple but a little bit of style.
This is for a pretty little knitting pattern.  To go on top of a table.

I had planned on doing some sewing today but I had such a sore back when I got finished with my housework because I had to tend to the yard and wash out the tub so I have to admit that I didn't get nearly as much done as I'd liked to have.
I've been spending very little time on the computer these days.  I have been trying very hard to stay in "my time".  This is much easier to do when I am not faced with the internet and inundated by current technology of all sorts.

October 20, 1949 - Why Are Post Earrings So Hard To Find?

The title says it all.  I am always on the lookout to expand my collection of vintage jewelery but I have to say that finding earrings is a huge problem.  I have maybe 10 pairs of authentic vintage earrings and about 2 dozen newer ones that can pass as vintage.  Whenever I see a pair that I really love it quickly turns out to be clip on.  I know that a sizable portion of women even back then had pierced ears.  My grandmother was a late adapter to everything and even she had her ears pierced.  I just don't understand why this is so difficult.  Now, I know that technically a woman with pierced ears can wear clip earrings, however, for any woman that is like me and has tried this, it leaves your pierced holes feeling swollen and sore.
These are a few of the really pretty earrings that I had to pass up because of them being clip-on.

I love the look of all of these.  I have even thought from time to time to buy a few and try to break off the clip and hot glue on some posts.  I stay away from doing that because the thought is always around in the back of my mind that these pieces have survived for around 60 years without being damaged and here I am ripping them apart.  On the other hand at least they would be getting used again.  Oh, I don't know what to do.

October 15, 1949 - Goodmorning All Of You Lovely People!

It really is a lovely morning, the hubby is off from work today and we are going to the old antiques mall today.  I am very excited because we are going to be not only getting things for ourselves but also getting Christmas presents for one another.
I know that everyone is going to groan about Christmas being talked about already, but hey it's coming up fast and what is better, to have it financially all hit you at once or to go slow over several months and build up the stack your getting your spouse.  We don't have any children so we try to get each other quite a few things every year.  Give or take a $300 spending limit.  Then we make plans to do up every weekend like it's something very special for the entire month of December.
We are also going to travel all over the mall that the antiques store is in and I am just dying to get a bottle of strawberry wine from BC Winery.  They make the best fruit wine that I have ever had in my life.  You wouldn't like it, if you didn't like sweet but I do and it is amazing.  They have a few flavors that are delicious but the strawberry is the best.
I will be off in just a little while to go get dressed in my shopping best to explore the stores of Frackville.  I'll let you know about the treasures that I find tomorrow or Thursday.

October 8, 1949 - A Few Advertisements

I thought that it would be nice to share with you a couple of the advertisements that were in my local 1949 newspaper today.

For starters I love the bottom pair of shoes.  I have never been great in heels but if I want to wear vintage 24/7 I suppose sacrifices have to be made.
A dress store that was once open and they had at least two very pretty designs.
Lastly what woman wouldn't want a fur coat.  I love faux fur, not really crazy about the real thing. Don't get me wrong I'm no crazy PETA nut but I don't believe in killing things for vanities sake.

Monday

Daily Pattern

A little girls pattern for today.  I like the embellishments and I have to wonder, did they perm a little girls hair back then if it wasn't curly.  I know that most women did.
I actually have an embroidery pattern that looks very much like the center one.  I haven't gotten around to making it at all but I think after Christmas when I get new towels I will be doing a his and hers or a mr and mrs set.

October 3, 1949 - Dinner Recipe and Just a Great Day

I was looking through one of my old magazines this morning and found a recipe that seemed so wonderfully simple that I had to try it.
The only thing that I left out was the tomatoes and that is only because I didn't have any in the house.  However, it came out beautifully.  We both enjoyed dinner very much.
This was the first day that I was back in the full swing of things in a very long time.  I spent the day cleaning and cooking, planning (thursday is always planning day) and planning the wardrobe for the future.
I have been on my reducing plan again as well for three days.  Including the two weeks I was on it before vacation I have lost a total of 10 pounds.  I still have a long way to go, but I feel as though I am moving in the right direction for my truly vintage wardrobe.
I have work at the market tomorrow so I am going to relax with the paper for another hour or so and then head off to slumberland. Good night.

I like simple skirts, when you are just spending the day around the house, who wants to spend it in a complicated dress.  This and a cotton top and possibly a cardigan would be perfect.

Tuesday

Greetings to the Fall Season

Hubby and I have been working very hard to get the house all decorated for the fall season.  I have a lot of decorations, vintage and not for fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving.  We have put up the fall and Halloween and the house looks absolutely lovely.  Pictures of all of this will follow shortly, and I will put up a more proper post.
Everything has been so busy lately that I simply haven't had the time, but that is going to change.  I am going to make it a point to change things boyj more authentically and for the better.

Daily Pattern

Sweet dress, looks like it's a juniors style but still would love it in red or green to go pumpkin picking.
I'm always a sucker for embroidery!

Monday

Daily Pattern

This is one of my favorite dresses that I have seen so far.  I love how the bottom is asymmetrical.  I also am surprised whenever I see a dress with long sleeves. Even winter dresses seem to be short sleeves it seems.
It honestly looks more like it should be rug than a blanket.  Don't really like it at all.

 REAL FASHION

I know that this was in one of the autumn papers but somehow it seems as though it would make a beautiful summer dress.
Not my favorite skirt but pretty.  I do like the big pockets.
Everybody loves a good old fashioned doily.

Friday

Daily Pattern

I really like the embroidered initials on the shoulder.  I have always been keen on personalization.  I also like the collar.
I will never really know how they do those edges.  I'm just simply not that good.

Thursday

Daily Pattern

Love this house dress!  I can just imagine this in a nice maroon or goldenrod.  The only thing that you have to watch is that you don't make it look like a waitress' uniform.

Wednesday

Daily Pattern . . . Well Sort Of

Every once in a while they don't have the daily pattern and instead have real fashion pictures or even a house plan which, I must admit I'm still waiting to see my home in it seeing as it was built in the fifties.

I love the one on the left and I have to ask, where do I find those shoes!

Tuesday

Daily Pattern

A junior dress.  I love that in the older days girls wanted nothing more than to look mature and lovely like their mother, instead of the mothers wanting to look somewhat trampy like their teenage daughters.
I've never been a big knitter but I must say, can you ever really have enough gloves and scarves.

September 23, 1949 - Yesterday & Today's Patterns

Among other things, I will try to bring up the patterns everyday.  There seems to be quite a bit of interest in them and who and I to say that, that isn't the most wonderful thing.

YESTERDAY  SEPTEMBER 22

A little girls dress.  I think this is just darling.  I know that this is something that a little girl wouldn't like in the modern world, but I can tell you that if I ever have a little girl she will be wearing this to school I can tell you that.
Cross stitch pattern,  I love cross stitch and from what I read of the directions they are only 5 stitches per inch so they wouldn't even take that long to make.  It's inspires me to work on my embroidery tonight which I think may just be in the cards.

 TODAY  SEPTEMBER 23
This dress would be just perfect for the State Fair, there is a good chance that I will be trying this one next year for just that.
I have a set that looks very close to this.  I'm somewhat looking forward to the winter for just such occasions as it would be appropriate to sit a night listening to my radio show sewing away.  It is a little busy this month, our vacation, state fair and Roba Farms.
REAL FASHION PHOTOS
I've never really liked the shirts that have the little ties around the neck.  A scarf is nice but these strings I'm just not fond of and the hat looks more like a bonnet from little house on the prairie.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

September 22, 1949 - Vacation Photos

I'm so sorry this took so long.  I do regret that I have not had time lately to write.  I will get back to it soon.  Here are some of the many, many pictures that I took while we were on vacation.
