July 26, 1950 - Our Anniversary

Two days ago hubby and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary with a massive antiquing trip to the local antiques mall. I spent a very large sum of money, but came home with many beautiful new items that I am insanely proud to have including two Sears catalogs. I will scan a few of the pages for you guys in the future. I'll also post pictures of everything else I bought. However, for now I am off to work.

July 23, 1950 - My 30 Day Challenge

Starting today I am beginning a thirty day challenge that will help me to live exclusively in my world.  I am going to be spending the next thirty days completely immersed in the 1950's.  To this day I am faced with new technology, new ways of doing things and I am forced to integrate them into my life. Not for the next thirty days I won't.
I am giving up all things new with the exception of my computer that I must use to chart my progress and stay in touch with all of you, as well as supplies shopping. However, I will be limiting my time on here to a mere 1 hour, every other day so if I don't talk for too long you will all know why. Thank you for humoring me.
I'll write soon.

July 20, 1050 - Recipe Club Meeting

I recently had the recipe club meeting in the ladies league.  I must admit I was a little upset because no one else shared their recipes.  However, there are still a few good ones that I shared myself so if anyone would like to pop on over and check it out.
If anyone has any ideas on ways that I can get people to know that the club is up and running.  You know, other message boards that have to do with the fifties or anything like that please let me know, otherwise I may just continue to feel all alone, hehe.
Well, I have work today so I must be off, I hope that everyone has a beautiful day, even those of us in the northeast that are getting a bit of rainy weather, it was sorely needed.

July 17, 1950 - The Recipe Club

Good Morning Everyone,
Today is the first meeting of the recipe club over at The Ladies League so stop on by and chat about your favorite vintage recipes.
Just to let everyone know I opened up the boards so you don't have to be a member anymore to post, I guess some people like their anonymity.  I still hope that everyone will join to support their vintage sisters but if not I understand that too.

July 16, 1950 - My New Hair

I am happy to say that I have made it one step closer to living a truly authentic fifties life.  On a whim about a week ago I purchased some original 1950's snap curlers on the world wide flea market, you all know what I mean.  When I got them they were a dream.  My hair is about shoulder length right now and unfortunately pin straight so I work hard to keep it in 50's fashion I think the curlers might help.  However, it takes so darn long for your hair to dry and I'm not crazy about sleeping in curlers.
This is when I came upon this baby, she is my mail order dream come true.  It is a 1956 Lady Sunbeam hair and nail dryer.  She is an aqua blue and in perfect condition.  Before you start thinking why didn't she just buy a new one, well anyone that follows this blog already knows that I try to do as many things authentically as possible and this is the old type that they don't sell anymore.  The kind with the bonnet that goes over your hair, while you just sit there with a good magazine.
It should be arriving in the next 10 days or so and I am looking very forward to making it a new part of my beauty routine.
I was thinking about letting my hair grow a bit, but now that I have this I feel confident that I can manage my fifties hairstyles much easier, therefore I'm probably going to go get it cut next weekend.
My father-in-law is coming over for dinner tomorrow night so I have to be off to the market to make sure that I have enough food for everyone.  I was only planning for two.

July 3, 1950 - So I've Been Thinking Clothes

It happens a lot in my mind.  I think about clothes.  My wardrobe is lacking at best and I want to improve it but I am a size that is not very conducive to the time in which I live.  Pretty much the only thing that would fit me is maternity clothes or mu-mus.  Neither of which I am interested in.  I have the Lutterloh system which works and I have two fifties years worth of books for it and I've never really made anything from it because it is so free hand that I am scared to.  I have recently started to get pictures of pretty much every adult woman's piece of clothing pattern from vintage pattern wiki and let me tell you, is that time consuming
I have tried many times to make it my mission to have a new wardrobe by a certain day and that simply is just not going to happen with my budget and my skill level, but I do vow to work harder on getting things down that I start.  There is a dress in my sewing box that has been sitting half finished for goodness knows how long.  It is a perfect summer dress and I became frustrated when the sleeves did not work out because I couldn't figure out how much extra material was needed since I had to let the whole dress out a bit. (The pattern was a 16 and I am not.)
So here I am making a promise to myself to start to work harder on my beautiful wardrobe so that I can not be ashamed of the closet that I have.
I have some extra material that I can make into some quick skirts and I have some blouses already that can be used with those skirts to make a somewhat band-aided wardrobe for the time being.  I love my 50's life.

July 2, 1950 - Just a Little Hello

I am working on a new part of the blog called "The Ladies League" it is something that I have wanted to do forever.  Eventually I want to make it open so that we can have members that participate.  The normal subjects would apply, a sewing circle, a recipe sharing club as well as charity work in your local community.  I will let you all know when it is up and running.  As you are well aware I try not to spend too much time on the computer.
